WOW!!!! is all that is needed to describe this past weekends Duel in the Desert Rounds 1 and 2.

Friday’s practice sessions gave a lot of first time visitors a chance to experience the uniqueness of SoCalQMA’s race track. By the time the horn went off to signal the end of the 7 hour open practice session, there were a lot of laps turned. The track was taking rubber and everyone was excited for the racing to begin.

Saturday, round 1, had everyone showing great speed and car control as we worked our way through the heat races and into the mains. After completing three and half of the first A-Main events, the skies opened up and the rain began. Watching the radar the SoCalQMA staff could tell it would be a quick moving cell and there was work to do. one of the great things about being located at such a great facility is the having use of the Speedway’s track equipment. After a quick visit from the dryer, the track was ready and the A-Mains were completed followed by an awards presentation under the lights.

Sunday, round 2, did not disappoint. With clear skies and warm weather, the drivers were ready to do battle and take home a winners trophy. Competitors had notes from day one and time to make some changes to their race cars and the work showed. The competition got more fierce and the racing was tight. Passes a plenty, 2 and 3 wide through most of the races it was anybody’s guess who would come out on top. When the racing concluded it was time for some very deserving drivers to collect their much earned trophy’s.

The weekend had many first time winners, some great racing, and lots of smiles.

SoCalQMA would like to congratulate all the competitors and teams. We also would like to thank everyone for making the trip to Southern California and to SoCalQMA Speedway and share your weekend with us.

Next race is Club Race #1 March 30 and Club Race #2 March 31. Stay tuned for more information…

SoCalQMA Drivers:

Getting Started

STEP 1 - COME TO A RACE

The best way to learn about Quarter Midget racing is to experience it in person. Check out our schedule and come out to a race. Be sure to talk to the track officials, handlers and drivers and ask all the questions you can.

STEP 2 - ARRIVE AND DRIVE

Every kid is different, but the first place we always recommend starting is at an Arrive & Drive. Several times each year, we provide the cars, safety equipment and trainers and for $20 your child between 5-16 can drive a real race car for about 20 laps to get a feel for the sport.

This is the easiest and cheapest way to get a taste of quarter midget racing and is perfect for seeing if it is a good fit for your driver and for the family. Your first $10 is applicable to your annual membership dues should you decide to join.

STEP 3 - PURCHASING EQUIPMENT

Once you’ve decided to take the plunge, the next step is purchasing the equipment. Be sure to speak with the Safety Director at your club regarding the necessary safety equipment and the requisite ratings. All safety equipment you purchase must meet the specifications within the rule book.

As far as cars go, most families start with used cars. These can range in price from a few hundred dollars for something needing a full refurbishment, up to a few thousand dollars for a race ready used car that will be competitive beyond the novice classes. Our members and handlers are always a great resource here as they generally can point you in a good direction. The quarter midget marketplace groups on Facebook can also be a solid resource.

STEP 4 - ROOKIE TRAINING

Once you have a car and the necessary safety equipment you can begin your Novice training. Kids as young as 4-1/2 can begin their Rookie training on the track, but must be 5 before entering their first race. Older and more mature kids will generally progress faster through the training process, but most drivers are ready for their first race after two to four training sessions. Key items that each driver must be competent in before receiving competition approval are; understanding flags, proper response to flags and track lights, proper line-up procedures, car control and passing ability, track entry and exit, and appropriate track behavior.

STEP 5 - LET’S GO RACING!!!

After receiving competition approval its for the driver to begin their racing career! Every driver must compete in a minimum of three Rookie races, at least one must be in Red Rookie and at least one must be in Blue Rookie (the terms Red and Blue correspond to the restrictor plate used in the respective class). Once the driver has received approval from the appropriate Socal QMA Competition Committee your driver will be moved into a competitive class of racing depending on their age and weight. This approval is at the discretion of the Committee and is only granted once the driver has competed in the minimum number of events and has demonstrated the necessary core competencies under racing conditions.
